Product details

Introduction

ASTM B163 Seamless Nickel Alloy Tube is the standard specification for seamless nickel and nickel alloy condenser and heat-exchanger tubes used in shell and tube heat exchangers, condensers, and similar heat transfer equipment. This specification covers a comprehensive range of nickel alloy seamless tube grades, including Nickel 200/201, Monel 400, Inconel 600/601/690, Incoloy 800/800H/800HT, and Incoloy 825, available in cold drawn or annealed conditions.

Inconel 600 seamless tubing is the most widely used grade within this standard, offering chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking resistance and high temperature corrosion resistance up to 2000°F (1093°C). Nickel 200 seamless tubing is commercially pure wrought nickel with excellent resistance to caustic environments. Nickel 201 seamless tubing is a low‑carbon variant for elevated temperature service above 600°F, preventing graphitization and embrittlement.

All products are supplied in cold drawn and annealed condition, available as straight lengths or U-bend tubes, with custom size, thin wall, and small diameter options.

Applications

1. Heat Exchangers & Condensers

  • Ideal for high‑temperature furnace gas coolers and reformer heat exchangers where chloride‑induced SCC is a concern – Inconel 600 heat exchanger bundles perform reliably up to 2000°F with excellent oxidation resistance.

  • For sulfuric and phosphoric acid heat exchangers, Incoloy 825 condenser tubing offers corrosion resistance comparable to higher‑cost alloys, commonly specified for interstage acid coolers and acid service reboilers.

  • Monel 400 seawater cooling coils are the standard choice for shipboard cooling systems and seawater‑cooled condensers, providing exceptional biofouling and crevice corrosion resistance.

  • Where product purity is critical in pharmaceutical and synthetic fiber processing, Nickel 200 caustic evaporator coils deliver near‑zero corrosion rates in concentrated NaOH and high‑purity water heat exchanger service.

  • For ethylene transfer line exchangers and syngas waste heat boilers with sustained thermal loads above 1100°F, Incoloy 800H / 800HT transfer line bundles provide controlled carbon (800H) or Al+Ti addition (800HT) for superior creep resistance.

2. Power Generation & Boiler Systems

  • Inconel 600 boiler reheater sections are used in nuclear feedwater heaters and superheater bundles where high‑temperature chloride and caustic environments are present, with proven SCC resistance up to 2000°F.

  • For pressurized water reactor (PWR) steam generator tubing and reactor coolant heat exchangers, Inconel 690 steam generator U‑bends offer exceptional SCC resistance in high‑purity, high‑temperature water.

  • Selected for elevated temperature boiler components above 600°F (315°C), Nickel 201 superheater coils prevent graphitization while maintaining ductility and corrosion resistance in superheated steam.

  • In coastal power plants, Monel 400 steam surface condenser bundles are specified for cooling water heat exchangers, providing superior seawater corrosion resistance and biofouling protection.

3. Chemical Processing & Petrochemical Industry

  • Incoloy 825 interstage acid cooler coils are preferred for sulfuric acid coolers, phosphoric acid evaporator coils, and amine reboilers. Titanium stabilization eliminates post‑weld heat treatment, reducing fabrication costs.

  • For process gas coolers and organic chloride condensers in high‑temperature chlorine and caustic streams, Inconel 600 process gas cooler bundles deliver reliable performance.

  • Across all concentrations of hydrofluoric acid, Monel 400 HF reboiler sections serve as the standard material for alkylation unit reboilers and acid storage tank heaters.

  • Incoloy 800H / 800HT syngas cooler bundles are designed for ethylene plant transfer line exchangers, providing creep resistance where other materials would fail at elevated temperatures.

4. Marine Engineering & Seawater Systems

  • Monel 400 marine condenser coils are the dominant choice for seawater‑cooled condensers, engine cooling coils, and ballast water heat exchangers, offering exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and biofouling.

  • For marine exhaust gas heat recovery and high‑temperature seawater cooling loops, Inconel 600 exhaust gas recovery sections provide combined resistance to chloride corrosion and elevated temperatures.

5. High Purity & Pharmaceutical Applications

  • Specified for water‑for‑injection heat exchangers, clean steam generators, and API synthesis cooling coils, Nickel 200 WFI cooling loops provide non‑toxic corrosion resistance for pharmaceutical and biotech processing.

  • For high‑temperature high‑purity water systems above 600°F, Nickel 201 high‑temperature water coils prevent graphitization while maintaining corrosion resistance and ductility.

  • Inconel 690 nuclear heat exchanger bundles are selected for nuclear steam generator tubing and reactor coolant heat exchangers, offering exceptional SCC resistance in ultrapure water at elevated temperatures.

6. Desalination & Industrial Heat Transfer

  • In MSF desalination plants, Monel 400 brine heater bundles resist hot concentrated brine and scale formation in brine heaters and evaporator tube sections.

  • Incoloy 825 high‑temperature evaporator coils are used in evaporators and reheater sections where sulfuric acid or chloride‑contaminated feed streams require elevated corrosion resistance.

  • Selected for thermal oxidizer coils and waste heat recovery bundles, Inconel 600 thermal oxidizer recovery sections withstand high temperatures and corrosive flue gases.

FAQ – ASTM B163 Nickel Alloy Tube

Q: What is the difference between ASTM B163 and ASTM B167?

A: ASTM B163 is specifically for seamless condenser and heat-exchanger tubes with maximum OD 3″, supplied as straight or U‑bend for heat exchanger service. ASTM B167 covers nickel‑chromium‑iron alloy pipe in larger diameters for general piping applications.

Q: What is the difference between Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 tubes?

A: Nickel 200 seamless tubing is commercially pure nickel (99.6% Ni) for general corrosive service. Nickel 201 seamless tubing has lower carbon (0.02% max) for elevated temperature service above 600°F (315°C), preventing graphitization and embrittlement.

Q: Why is Inconel 600 preferred over stainless steel for heat exchanger tubes?

A: Inconel 600 heat exchanger bundles offer chloride‑ion stress‑corrosion cracking resistance and high temperature corrosion resistance up to 2000°F, outperforming stainless steels in aggressive chloride, caustic, and high‑temperature environments.

Q: What is the difference between Incoloy 800H and 800HT?

A: Incoloy 800H transfer line bundles have controlled carbon (0.05–0.10%) for improved creep strength above 1100°F. Incoloy 800HT syngas cooler bundles add aluminum and titanium (0.85–1.20% Al+Ti) for maximum creep and rupture strength in the most demanding high‑temperature applications.

Q: Can ASTM B163 tubes be supplied as U-bend tubes?

A: Yes, ASTM B163 U‑bend tubes are commonly supplied for shell and tube heat exchangers to accommodate thermal expansion, with seamless construction ensuring no weld seams in the bend radius.
