Product details

Introduction

ASTM B161 Pure Nickel Seamless Pipe is the standard specification for commercially pure nickel (UNS N02200) and low‑carbon nickel (UNS N02201) in the form of cold‑worked or hot‑finished seamless pipe and tube. This specification covers two primary grades: Nickel 200 Seamless Pipe (UNS N02200) and Nickel 201 Seamless Pipe (UNS N02201), distinguished mainly by carbon content—Nickel 200 at 0.15% max, and Nickel 201 at 0.02% max.

Nickel 200 seamless pipe is commercially pure wrought nickel (99.6% min) offering excellent mechanical properties, high thermal and electrical conductivity, and outstanding resistance to caustic alkalis and reducing acids. Nickel 201 seamless pipe is the low‑carbon variant, preferred for service above 600°F (315°C) where graphitization and embrittlement become concerns.

All products are supplied in cold‑drawn or hot‑finished seamless condition, available in custom sizes, small diameter, large diameter, thin wall, and heavy wall configurations.

Applications

1. Caustic Alkali & Chlor‑Alkali Processing

  • For caustic soda evaporators and concentrators handling sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) at elevated temperatures, Nickel 200 seamless pipe delivers near‑zero corrosion rates. Its high purity and resistance to caustic embrittlement make it the standard material for chlor‑alkali cell piping and brine handling systems.

  • In chlorine and caustic production facilities, ASTM B161 Nickel 200 pipe is specified for transfer lines and reactor feed systems where both high temperature and aggressive alkaline media are present.

2. Chemical Processing & Acid Handling

  • Pure nickel seamless pipe exhibits excellent resistance to hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, and sulfuric acid under reducing conditions. It is widely used in fluorine and hydrogen fluoride handling systems, aniline hydrochloride production, and viscose rayon manufacturing.

  • Nickel 201 seamless pipe is preferred for applications above 600°F where carbon precipitation could lead to embrittlement. Its low‑carbon content maintains ductility and corrosion resistance in superheated chemical service.

  • For chemical plant distillation columns, reactors, and vessels handling corrosive media, ASTM B161 pure nickel alloy pipe provides long‑term reliability with minimal maintenance.

3. Food Processing & Pharmaceutical Equipment

  • Specified for food processing equipment, dairy pasteurizers, and edible oil processing lines, Nickel 200 pipe offers non‑toxic corrosion resistance and easy cleanability. Its resistance to food acids and cleaning agents ensures product purity.

  • In pharmaceutical manufacturing, ASTM B161 Nickel 201 pipe is used for high‑purity water (WFI) systems and API transfer lines where trace metal contamination must be avoided. The low‑carbon grade maintains corrosion resistance at elevated sterilization temperatures.

4. Heat Exchangers & Condensers

  • Pure nickel seamless pipe is specified for heat exchanger tubing, condenser coils, and feedwater heaters where caustic or high‑temperature water streams are present. Its high thermal conductivity (approx. 70 W/m·K) and corrosion resistance make it ideal for heat transfer equipment in chemical and power plants.

  • ASTM B161 seamless nickel pipe is also used in seawater‑cooled condensers and offshore heat exchangers, offering excellent resistance to erosion‑corrosion and cavitation.

5. Marine & High‑Purity Industrial Systems

  • UNS N02200 nickel pipe is highly resistant to seawater corrosion and biofouling, making it suitable for marine engineering, shipboard piping, and offshore platform utility systems.

  • For electronic‑grade chemical transfer lines and semiconductor manufacturing equipment, ASTM B161 Nickel 200/201 pipe provides the high purity and corrosion resistance required for ultra‑clean environments.

6. Power Generation & Nuclear Industry

  • In power plants, Nickel 201 seamless pipe is used in superheater sections and boiler feedwater heaters where temperatures exceed 600°F. Its low‑carbon composition prevents graphitization during prolonged high‑temperature exposure.

  • For nuclear industry applications, ASTM B161 pure nickel pipe offers excellent resistance to high‑temperature water corrosion and radiation stability, making it suitable for reactor coolant systems and auxiliary piping.

FAQ – ASTM B161 Nickel Pipe

Q: What is the difference between ASTM B161 and ASTM B163 for nickel pipe?

A: ASTM B161 covers Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 seamless pipe and tube in diameters up to 4.5″, for general corrosive and high‑temperature service. ASTM B163 specifically covers nickel alloy condenser and heat‑exchanger tubes with max OD 3″, supplied as straight or U‑bend for heat exchanger applications. B161 is the broader standard for pure nickel piping systems.

Q: When should I choose Nickel 200 over Nickel 201?

A: Nickel 200 seamless pipe is suitable for service up to 600°F (315°C) in caustic and reducing acid environments. Nickel 201 seamless pipe is preferred for applications above 600°F, as its lower carbon content (0.02% max) prevents graphitization and embrittlement during prolonged high‑temperature exposure.

Q: What industries commonly use ASTM B161 pure nickel pipe?

A: Key industries include chlor‑alkali plants (caustic soda evaporators, cell piping), chemical processing (hydrochloric/hydrofluoric acid handling), food and pharmaceutical processing, heat exchanger manufacturing, marine engineering, and power generation.

Q: Why is pure nickel preferred over stainless steel for caustic service?

A: Nickel 200/201 seamless pipe offers near‑zero corrosion rates in concentrated sodium hydroxide (NaOH) up to 350°C, whereas stainless steels suffer from caustic stress corrosion cracking and general corrosion. Pure nickel also provides higher thermal conductivity for heat transfer applications.
