Introduction

Incoloy A‑286 Nickel Alloy (UNS S66286) is a precipitation‑hardenable stainless steel that retains high strength up to 700°C, exceeding conventional austenitic stainless steel like Type 304. This A‑286 superalloy contains higher nickel content and precipitates the γ' phase [Ni₃(Al,Ti)] during service, resulting in a reinforced metal at elevated temperatures. As an A‑286 precipitation hardening alloy and nickel iron chromium alloy A‑286, it is widely used in aerospace, fasteners, and gas turbine parts where high strength and creep resistance are required.

1. ASTM A453 / A638 (Standard Specification for High‑Temperature Bolting / Iron‑Base Superalloy Bars and Forgings)

Grade: Grade 660 Class A / Class B / A‑286 precipitation hardening alloy

Advantages

(1)Excellent high temperature strength up to 700°C: Incoloy A-286 round bar and forging maintain superior creep rupture strength and tensile properties through γ' precipitation hardening, ideal for gas turbine fasteners and discs.

(2)Good oxidation and scaling resistance: Incoloy A-286 sheet and strip form a protective oxide layer in high temperature air and combustion gas environments, reducing material loss in jet engine components.

(3)Outstanding stress rupture life under high load: Incoloy A-286 alloy bolt and stud resist relaxation and thermal creep at 650–700°C, ensuring reliable clamping force for turbine casing and exhaust system connections.

(4)Excellent fabricability and weldability: Incoloy A-286 welding wire and filler rod enable fabrication of complex parts with good ductility, followed by age hardening heat treatment to achieve full strength.

(5)Good resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and thermal fatigue: Incoloy A-286 seamless tube and pipe perform reliably in rocket engine thrust chambers and afterburner liners requiring oxidation resistant nickel alloy with high cyclic life.


Applications

(1)Gas turbine and aero engine fasteners – Incoloy A-286 bolt, nut, and washer are widely specified for turbine casing joints, compressor sections, and exhaust nozzle attachments operating up to 700°C.

(2)Jet engine discs and spacers – Incoloy A-286 forging and billet are used for compressor discs, turbine spacers, and seal rings where high strength to weight ratio and creep resistance are critical.

(3)High temperature shafts and valve stems – Incoloy A-286 round bar serves in gas turbine fuel nozzles, throttle valves, and supercharger components requiring precipitation hardened superalloy with good oxidation barrier.

(4)Aerospace exhaust system components – Incoloy A-286 sheet and plate are applied for tailpipes, mixer ducts, and heat shields in afterburning turbojet and turbofan engines.

(5)Nuclear and chemical pressure vessels – Incoloy A-286 stud and threaded rod offer reliable performance in high temperature bolting applications for reactor internals and heat exchangers requiring corrosion resistant nickel alloy with high strength.
