Introduction

Hastelloy B-2 Alloy (also Hastelloy B2, Alloy B-2, Nickel Alloy B-2, UNS N10665 Alloy) is a nickel‑molybdenum alloy offering exceptional hydrochloric acid resistance across a wide range of concentrations and temperatures. It conforms to ASTM B333 (pipe), ASTM B622 (seamless tube), ASTM B619 (welded pipe), ASTM B335 (bar), and ASTM B575 (plate/sheet), as well as ASME SB333 and SB575. This nickel molybdenum alloy is specifically designed for reducing acid environments, where it outperforms stainless steels and many high‑nickel alloys.


Key properties of Hastelloy B-2 for hydrochloric acid service:

  • Exceptional hydrochloric acid resistance – negligible corrosion rates in pure HCl from dilute to concentrated, at temperatures up to boiling point

  • Superior reducing acid resistance – outstanding performance in sulfuric acid (non‑oxidizing), phosphoric acid, and acetic acid

Note: Hastelloy B-2 is highly susceptible to oxidation in the presence of oxidizing species (e.g., ferric ions, dissolved oxygen). It is recommended for strictly reducing environments.

Applications

1. Hydrochloric Acid Service & Handling Equipment

  • Hastelloy B-2 for hydrochloric acid service – piping, heat exchangers, and reactor linings in hydrochloric acid production, purification, and transfer systems. Exceptional hydrochloric acid resistance extends equipment life far beyond stainless steel or other nickel alloys.

  • Hastelloy B-2 for hydrochloric acid production – absorber columns, stripper reboilers, and HCl gas coolers in by‑product HCl recovery (from chlorination processes). Hydrogen chloride resistance prevents dry HCl corrosion.

  • Hastelloy B-2 for acid transfer piping – safe, leak‑free transport of concentrated HCl at ambient and elevated temperatures.


2. Acid Storage Tanks & Pickling Systems
