Introduction

Alloy 20 Pipe (also known as Carpenter 20 PipeAlloy 20 Seamless PipeAlloy 20 Welded PipeUNS N08020 PipeDIN 2.4660 Pipe) is a nickel-iron-chromium austenitic alloy developed specifically for maximum resistance to acid attack, particularly sulfuric acid. It conforms to ASTM B729 Alloy 20 Pipe (seamless, cold-worked or hot-finished), ASTM B464 Alloy 20 PipeASTM B468 Alloy 20 Pipe, and ASME SB729 Alloy 20 Pipe. This corrosion resistant alloy 20 pipe is widely used in chemical processing plants, fertilizer production, pharmaceutical equipment, acid storage systems, and pickling lines where 316L and other standard stainless steels are inadequate.


Key properties of Alloy 20 Pipe:

  • Sulfuric acid corrosion resistance – excellent resistance to sulfuric acid across a wide range of concentrations and temperatures; resistant to hot sulfuric acid with corrosion rates <0.13 mm/year up to 50°C

  • Chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance – with approximately 33% nickel content, Alloy 20 has practical immunity to chloride SCC

  • Superior corrosion resistance – excellent resistance to phosphoric acid, nitric acid, and a variety of chemical environments

  • Nickel-iron-chromium alloy – contains copper (3-4%) and molybdenum (2-3%) additions that enhance resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion

  • Niobium stabilized – contains niobium (Cb) for stabilization against sensitization and intergranular corrosion

  • Good fabricability – suitable for TIG, MIG, and SAW welding; easily formed through hot and cold working

Note: Alloy 20 was developed specifically to withstand sulfuric acid. Its nickel, chromium, molybdenum and copper levels provide excellent general corrosion resistance, making it the preferred choice for acid handling systems, fertilizer plants, and pharmaceutical processing.


This acid resistant nickel alloy pipe is available in seamless (ASTM B729) and welded (ASTM B464/B468) forms, cold drawn and hot finished, with pickled or polished surfaces.
