Introduction

Monel K500 (UNS N05500 / Alloy K500) is an age-hardenable nickel-copper alloy that combines Monel 400's corrosion resistance with much higher strength. Through precipitation hardening with aluminum and titanium, it achieves roughly three times the yield strength and double the tensile strength of Monel 400. The alloy offers excellent resistance to seawater, hydrofluoric acid, and stress corrosion cracking, and can be further strengthened by cold working before aging. Ideal for marine engineering, oil and gas, and aerospace applications. Available in round bar, sheet, plate, wire, forgings, pipe, and fittings to meet various standards (e.g., ASTM B865, B127, B165) upon request.

Advantages

(1) High strength – As an age-hardenable nickel-copper alloy (UNS N05500), Monel K500 achieves approximately three times the yield strength and double the tensile strength of Monel 400 through precipitation hardening with aluminum and titanium.

(2) Excellent corrosion resistance – The alloy retains Monel 400's outstanding resistance to seawater, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, and chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, making it ideal for harsh marine and chemical environments.

(3) Good corrosion fatigue and erosion resistance – Monel K500 withstands cyclic loading and abrasive media, ensuring long-term reliability in pump shafts, valves, and marine propellers.

Wide temperature performance – The material maintains high strength and toughness from cryogenic temperatures up to about 480°C, suitable for both low-temperature and moderate high-temperature applications.

(4) Excellent fabricability – This nickel-copper superalloy can be hot worked, cold worked, welded, and formed into round bar, sheet, plate, wire, forgings, pipe, and fittings. Cold working before precipitation hardening further increases strength.

(5) Low magnetic permeability – Monel K500 exhibits low magnetic permeability, making it suitable for electronic and instrumentation applications where magnetic interference must be minimized.


Applications

(1)Marine engineering – Widely used in pump shafts, propeller shafts, valve components, seawater piping systems, and fasteners on ships, submarines, and offshore platforms, thanks to its seawater corrosion resistance and high strength.

(2)Oil and gas industry – Applied in downhole equipment, wellhead components, sour gas service tools, and blowout preventers, where resistance to hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and chloride stress corrosion is critical.

(3)Aerospace and defense – Employed in instrumentation, fuel and hydraulic system components, and rocket engine parts requiring high strength and corrosion resistance.

(4)Chemical processing – Used in heat exchangers, reaction vessels, evaporators, and hydrofluoric acid storage tanks where Monel 400 lacks sufficient mechanical strength.

(5)Fasteners and springs – A preferred material for high-strength bolts, nuts, and springs in corrosive environments, meeting ASTM B865 standards.

(6)Electronics and instrumentation – Suitable for diaphragms, precision components, and magnetic shielding where low permeability and good mechanical properties are essential.
